With the close of October came the end of Lolly’s Socktoberfest party– a celebration of sock knitting. What a great idea! A bit in the spirit of Project Spectrum, Socktoberfest is a combination of challenging oneself and reveling in the community that is built up around the event (particularly on Ravelry, but also on Flickr and in the wider bloging community) makes for a wonderful time! This year, I suppose my goal was simply to “opt in.” This was more a recipe for starting rather than finishing lots of socks. But I am happy to report that I do have one pair of finished socks to show for myself…
As part of the Soctoberfestivities, Kirsten Kapur of Through the Loops designed a sock pattern and a KAL to go along with it. What a great pattern! Easily memorizable, but with a bit of a challenge thrown in with the cables.
I was at a bit of a loss for yarn to use, until I stumbled upon some long forgotten Fearless Fibers Classic Merino in my stash. I think I recieved this as part of a spectrum swap on SwapBot a year or so ago. I adore Fearless Fibers. The shaded varigation is over-the-top beatiful and while the yarn can be a bit splitty to work with, once knit up the fabric is divine– oh, I still adore you Marigolds. Ahhhh. (Oh, note: I see that Deb is now selling “Tight Twist” superwash sock yarn, so maybe that would be something to check out if a loose twist makes you crazy.) I am a little nervous about the durability of pure merino. I intend to go back and duplicate stitch a bit in the heels with some thread for strength (a la Leslie). Once done, these puppies will be off in the mail to my mom (who I have been neglecting of late, knit-wise and even more so sock-wise!).
All in all, I’m really happy with these socks… so much so that I may go back and knit another pair for me!
